VfL Bochum suffered a serious setback on May 2nd when Maxi Wittek (30) left the pitch after a duel with Monju Momuluh (Bielefeld). His left thigh developed a compartment syndrome that almost led to amputation. Thanks to swift medical action the leg was saved and Wittek is already back in training after six weeks.

What happened?

During the clash on May 2nd Momuluh struck Wittek on the thigh. At first it seemed only a bruise, but the leg swelled dramatically and pressure increased. Wittek messaged his doctor Mark Sandfort, saying he would try to sleep – a try that failed. Pain worsened, prompting Sandfort to send the player immediately to Bochum's Knappschaft Clinics. Doctors diagnosed a rare compartment syndrome, meaning reduced blood flow to the tissue.

How was it resolved?

Mark Sandfort ordered emergency surgery. The leg was fully opened to relieve pressure. Four procedures followed within ten days: the initial operation, a second closure of the 21‑cm scar (17 stitches), and a third opening of the thigh to remove a hematoma. The surgery saved the leg and the muscle stayed intact. Wittek thanked Sandfort for the rapid response, stressing that every hour counted.

Why does it matter for VfL Bochum?

The club currently sits 9th in the 2. Bundesliga with 44 points (11 wins, 11 draws, 12 losses) and has recorded three wins and two draws in its last five games – a three‑game winning streak. With 49 goals scored and 47 conceded, Bochum trails league leaders FC Schalke 04 by 26 points. The latest victory, a 2‑1 win over Karlsruher SC on May 17, showcased the team's attacking edge. Wittek's return could further boost the offense, especially as the club prepares for the season opener against Hertha Berlin in August.

What’s next?

Wittek is already training with his teammates, increasing his workload. If all goes well, he could feature in the August 7 kickoff against Hertha Berlin at 20:30. The club hopes his health will push the team forward, while fans look forward to a successful campaign.

VfL Bochum remains mid‑table, fighting for points and hoping that the return of key players like Wittek will make the difference.
